Iliotibial band syndrome occurs when there is inflammation of the flexible piece of connective tissue that extends from the knee to the hip on the outside of each leg. The IT Band is thick around the knee and hip area and when inflamed, there can be excessive rubbing against the knee, thighbone, or hip structure which can cause painful symptoms of further swelling. It is commonly caused during activities of high repetition where bending of the knee is involved. This includes running, biking, long distance walks, etc. Downhill running and exercising on uneven surfaces can exacerbate the issue.
